【讲座主题】How Labor Market Competition Shapes Workplace-Related Information on Social Media: Evidence from Glassdoor Reviews

Rencheng Wang joined SMU in 2019. He has previously taught at the University of Queensland and University of Melbourne in Australia. He received his Ph.D. from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Rencheng has a broad range of interests in research at the intersection of accounting and finance. His works have been published in the Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and The Accounting Review. 

【内容提要】

This study examines how labor market competition affects the quality of workplace-related information on social media. Using Glassdoor reviews to capture workplace-related information in the labor market, we find that positive employer reviews are less relevant in explaining actual workplace performance for firms facing more intense labor market competition. The effect is stronger when job seekers are more likely to rely on Glassdoor for workplace-related information and when a firm has greater concerns about the costs of attracting talent. Collectively, these results suggest that firms could actively manage their workplace-related information on social media, without necessarily improving their real workplace performance.
